Fort Yukon Community Centre

Fort Yukon Community Centre (top pic - entrance) has an enrolment no. of about 50 students engaged in f2f & also CDE courses. The Centre is the initiative of UAF & the Fort Yukon Tribal Council. The tribal council also provide assistance in the form of scholarships & payment of instructor time. Most of the courses offered by the Centre ties in very closely with what the needs of the community such as Tribal Management, Construction courses etc.
What we were so fascinated about is the community atmosphere @ the Centre. The Centre normally hosts various community events such as the one we saw i.e. a bazaar (3rd pic) & we saw a transformation of the reception desk (2nd pic) for instance into a selling table for one of the sellers.
The Centre have also expanded its premises & have added on classrooms & a computer lab. In the picture [4th left] you can see Curt & Richard during a jam session in one of the new classrooms.
The community concept is perhaps ideal for some if not all of our Centres. It fosters a closer relationship with community & enables community to perceive the Centre as their own & not of a separate entity of purely academic in nature!! Something that USP can look into??
